Sam Cunningham was the father of Raine Cunningham.
Biography[]
He came to London in November 1967 in order to see Northwade and to take something from the London Dungeon. He worked with the Ice Warrior Hhessh to obtain some artefacts, including the helmet of the Ice Lord Sezhyr.
He along with Sharon Graves, met up with the Seventh Doctor and Ace, the later of whom discovered Hhesh, the two decided to join him, Hhessh and Northwade on the mission. After learning that Sharon was pregnant, he and the others were taken aboard the Ice Warrior ship. He and the Doctor then left with the newborn baby, but later returned to free Sharon, who had been taken over by Sezhyr. (TV: Thin Ice)

Twenty-three years after meeting him, Sam was reunited with the Seventh Doctor in 1990. He got the Doctor to help him retrieve some items that he had been forced to sell due to a financial meltdown. He, along with Raine, joined the Doctor in trying to retrieve a Fabergé egg, which was in fact an alien device known as a Warpstorm. Later on, Sam told Raine that she could travel with the Doctor if she wanted to. (TV: Crime of the Century)
Sam attended the funeral of Raine's friend Julian Milton, where he reunited with Raine and met the Eighth Doctor. (TV: Love and War)
Sam reunited with Raine at his house after she had decided to stop traveling with The Doctor. (TV: Blood Heat)

- Sam is the first parent of a companion to make a physical appearance as an adult. Audrey Dudman, Ace's mother, appeared as a baby in The Curse of Fenric.
